   My previous backpag ripped a strap but did serve me well since 2009. I expect the Kodiak to last even longer. I’m hauling a Dell Latitude E6530 for work and I also have a iPad Air in a Defender case and a few tools, etc. Added a Maxpedition Janus for sun and safety glasses. All in all, a really good and good looking backpack. The single strap is not an issue as I’m going from home to car / car to work. If I was carrying this for decent periods of time fully loaded, I wouldn’t have gotten this bag. Loaded moderately, it’s an all day bag no problem. The only things keeping this from being a 5 star bag: 1. Needs retention strap (like the jumbo for example) to keep odd shaped coffee mugs, etc. from falling out the pouch on the side 2. Laptop area could be a lil larger AND include some padding at the bottom. Wish those would be addressed and also be offered in a standard two strap design. All in all it’s a great bag that you can make your own. The swing around and get to your stuff appeal is great and I can’t wait to make use of it on our next vacation.

   Super durchdacht, top Qualität und auch die Farbkombi ist sehr gelungen. Mit persönlich war er etwas zu groß vom Volumen her für einen Slinger, daher ging er zurück und nun bin ich mit dem kleinen Bruder, dem Sitka Gearslinger von Maxpedition wunschlos glücklich. 13″ Macbook und allerlei Zubehör passen perfekt rein.

   First I want to say, I bought a black Kodiak from githubja.com Warehouse Deals for $115, listed as Like New. It arrived promptly and sure enough it was like new, so I’m very pleased with that. Now, the real question who would want this bag and what are the pros and cons of it? Well, it’s well made as many people know, so I won’t talk about that, however it’s important to understand what this bag is all about. The Kodiak Gearslinger is not designed for heavy hikes or long hikes, it’s better suited for people who want something they can take on and off quickly. This comes in handy when shopping, on the bus, or on the subway. Before using the Kodiak, I was using a Maxpedition Falcon-II Backpack. The Falcon II can hold more stuff, but it was slow, to take off, open, and close. The Kodiak is much faster; swing it in front of you, open bag, insert stuff, close bag, and slide behind you again. Also, compared to the Falcon II it’s smaller (1100ci vs 1520 ci) but it uses it’s space better than the Falcon II. For example, on one shopping trip, I bought a frying pan, and put it in the Kodiak, that same same frying though would have been too wide for the narrow Falcon II, despite the Falcon’s overall larger size. The Kodiak is not designed for carrying laptop computers but it’s has a couple of compartments where a laptop can be slid in and buckled down, which I like. If you like to have a Camelbak while running than you will be happy to know that it can be a decent Camelbak too, especially if lightly loaded, but if loaded with more stuff it will have some swing to it, even with it cinched down, and with the extra sternum strap used. The real downside of the Kodiak is that if you put maybe 10 or 12 pounds of weight in it, it will start to feel uncomfortable. Everyday I carry my laptop in it, and sometimes some textbooks. Laptop alone, a go. Laptop plus books, ugh. Now with everything said I think it’s a great pack in it’s own way, but it could use an update. Making it ambidextrous would be nice, and heck since people do use this as a laptop carrier why not make a laptop carrier version with some extra padding? Also, work on the load distribution. Something else to keep in mind, if you only have money for one pack, get a traditional backpack for the versatility. On the other hand if you have money to spare and you know what you want to do with this bag, than get the Kodiak.

   Buenos materiales con los compartimentos y bolsillos en horizontal, para ser abiertos frontalmente delante.
   A mí, me llegó con el cierre buckle superior roto, un lado de la hebilla y tiene difícil reparación. El porta bidones exterior añade dimensiones a la mochila y es de difícil acceso, ya que cuando te la pones horizontalmente, queda abajo y, ni siquiera con mis brazos largos, me resulta fácil agarrar la botella. Podría disponer de 2 grandes coreas y 4 anillas para poderla llevar con comodidad, como una mochila en horizontal o una sling pack bandolera, ya que es muy incómoda de llevar por la calle delante frontalmente, también es incómoda de llevar lateralmente. Calidad con diseño mejorable.

   There is no question this bag is solidly built. Heavy nylon cloth, waterproofed, heavy duty zippers and decent straps and buckles. I admit I was expecting larger capacity for the bag to be my daily carry with laptop and basic computer tools. I was able to enhance the capacity adding external pouches to the molle straps which provided space for cell phones, multi tool, pens and headphones.

   I would not recommend this as a camping pack but a very decent day pack or commuter bag.

   Update: Coming up on 3 years using this bag on a pretty much daily basis. No appreciable wear anywhere on the material, seams or zippers. I have upgraded all the zipper pulls but, aside from that, the bag and accessories are still going strong. That’s 3 years to and from the office, dragged from site to site in the field and weekends and holidays. Maxpedition products all seem yo be super durable and well designed. I’m upgrading my rating from 4 stars to 5 simply because this bag is holding up better than anything I have ever owned.
