   I’ve been making slings out of paracord for a while now and have tried several brands of cordage, and I’m ex-military, so I’ve been using paracord for everything from lanyards to actual parachutes for decades. This stuff is beyond better than anything I’ve found yet. It’s not stiff at all. Perfect diameter. The outer layer is super slinky like Spectra (Kevlar) and never bunches up or catches a snag, it never gets a “bulge” and it is truly tuff as all hell. On my slings I wrap the pouch with a double braid and pull it extremely tight and got zero bunching of the outer layer. After working with two 20 foot strands and was finishing the end of the sling, there was zero bunching of the outer layer. It’s just amazing stuff to work with, and beautiful. It’s made in the U.S.A. baby! And it’s no more expensive than the cheap stuff. No brainer here; whether you’re hanging your underpants, or repelling off a cliff (no recommendation here) just get it and I guarantee you won’t be disappointed.

   I have purchased and used quite a bit of 550 cord over the past thirty years. Fifteen of those years were while I was in the military (US Army Infantry)… This is the best quality that I have found, outside of the military supply system! My supply of 550 around the house was running low, so I pulled the trigger and purchased a one thousand foot spool of the OD Green (they called it “camo green”). The box arrived today, and here are the results that this obsessive compulsive old grunt found: The shipping bashed the cardboard spool a little, but that’s the mail, right? Using a twenty five foot tape measure, I unwound the cord into a five gallon bucket in a cord to tape measure feed, as the tape measure payed out across the floor… repeating the procedure until the entire spool was counted. Tedious, but accurate. Final tally: nine hundred and seventy eight feet, eight inches. (978’ 8”). Close enough to a thousand, for me to accept it. ***I used a two person method, where the cord travelled inch for inch with a metal tape measure (without the cord being under tension) and the second person recording each cycle. In my experience, I have received and measured rolls from various suppliers that were as little as ten feet over or under the thousand foot mark—or forty feet over or under. The difference can come from the mechanical counter (and calibration of it), and the tension of the feed at production… or even the day of the week at the factory. If the length is more than fifty feet off (aka “Short”), on a thousand foot spool, then that’s when you have an issue. Sometimes the 550 gods give, and sometimes they take a taste. 🙂 After measuring the cord, I used tape to reinforce the cardboard roll (as shown in the picture) and hand rolled the cord back onto the spool. The outer sheath is well woven, and flexible…. The inner core is seven strands and what is commonly called a “Tracer line.” (See the picture with the strands) The inner strands are of good quality, and can be used on its own, for other tasks. We called it, “Using the 550 guts…” When I am ready to purchase more 550 cord, I am going to reach out to Tough Grid!

   You will need to use an old knife to cut this cord. If you use a lighter, the white strands underneath will pop out, and then slide around a black casing, which is no good. So follow the manufacturer’s advice, which is to get an old steak knife (non-serrated) with a wooden handle, and heat it up over an open flame until it’s very hot, and then use it to cut the cord on a heat resistant surface (I used a piece of scrap lumber). This way the ends will seal the strands together. Use an old knife, because this will ruin it. I tried using a hot knife, the kind of wood burning, and it didn’t work, and I ruined a brand new tip. Oh well. The paracord worked perfect for what I needed it to, although a little on the thicker side. I have plenty left for other projects, if needed.
